Halloween in France: Called “Fête des morts”. Halloween is the first holiday in France. The French Halloween celebration is very modest compared to the American one, but this doesn’t mean nothing happens.
In France, Halloween is perceived by many as a commercial event whose goal is to bring more money to businesses. French people said “Halloween is not our culture, we must stop losing our identity and most of all, borrowing from the anglophones”
Consequently, la Toussaint is a Catholic celebration and public holiday on November 1st, the day after Halloween. Most French workers have November first off and school children 2 weeks vacation.
How French Do Celebrate Halloween?
There are 3 ways to celebrate Halloween. The first one is in Disneyland Paris, which is probably the easiest way to satisfy kids’ Halloween fantasies. This year’s Halloween Festival’s theme is “A Tentacular Mist of Mischief.” Also a festive parade nightly and a special Disney villains-only showcases.
The second way is children would dress up in honor of these creatures and parade around their neighborhoods. People would give them gifts as a way of fending off the supposed wickedness of these supernatural beings, in essence, the origins of “trick or treat”.
There is also the Famous Parade in Limoges. Limoges is the capital of Haute-Vienne in the Limousin region of France and has celebrated Halloween with a special parade. The route of the parade participants dressed as vampires, witches, and ghosts passes through the central streets of the city.
